Office of the Information Commissioner (OIC)

The Information Commissioner provides a relatively speedy, cheap, fairly informal and user-friendly method of dispute resolution in disputes between agencies and applicants under the FOI Act.

Applications made under the FOI Act for access to documents, or to amend documents, must be made to the government agency which holds those documents.

A person who is not satisfied with an agency’s decision at internal review can apply for external review by the Information Commissioner. The Commissioner or her delegate is able to conduct a complete review of the merits of the decision and make a determination.
